Ram Gopal Varma is a Bollywood director, producer and screenwriter. He makes Telugu as well as Hindi films. He is famous for his psychological thrillers and films related to the underworld.
Early Life
Ram Gopal Varma Penmetsa was born on 7th April 1962 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. His parents are Krishnam Raju Penmetsa and Satyavathi. Ramu had a strained relationship with his father, because he was disinterested in studies and would bunk school.
He completed his graduation in Civil Engineering from V.R.Siddhartha Engineering College, Vijayawada. During his engineering days Varma would skip classes and go to watch films. He was a huge film buff would watch eight to ten films a week.
After completing his graduation, Varma wanted to enter the film industry, but wasn’t lucky. He gave up hopes and decided to go to Nigeria to earn money. However, as destiny would have it, Varma visited a video rental library in Hyderabad. He was so passionate about cinema that he decided to open his own video rental library.

1988- 2000
Started his career in the Telugu film industry before entering Bollywood. Varma’s father was a sound recordists at Annapurna Studios, Hyderabad. The Annapurna Studios is owned by Akkineni Nageswara Rao. Varma would keep lingering around the sets of the films RAOGARILLU (1988) and COLLECTOR GARI ABBA (1987), for which he was the first assistant director.
During this time Varma met Akkineni Nagarjuna, Akkineni Nageswara Rao. Varma narrated a scene to Nagarjuna. Nagarjuna was so impressed that he asked Varma to make the Telugu film SHIVA (1989). The debut film, SHIVA (1989) revolved around student politics and crime. The film was a success. The film was dubbed in Hindi in 1990 and marked Ram Gopal Varma’s Bollywood debut. SHIVA (1990) was also the Bollywood debut of Nagarjuna. His other Telugu films were KSHANA KSHANAM (1991), ANTAM (1992), RATHRI (1992), GAAYAM (1993), GOVINDHA GOVINDHA (1993), DEYYAM (1996), ANAGANAGA OKA ROJU (1997) and PREM KATHA (1999).
Ram Gopal Varma’s second Bollywood film was RAAT (1992). RAAT (1992) was a horror film starring Revathi in the lead role of Manisha, nicknamed Mini. Manisha is a collegian and her family relocates to a house that is known to be haunted. Many supernatural incidents take place: a dead cat returns to life, Manisha’s friend is killed; an attempt is made to kill her father and friend Deepak. The thriller, shocking in parts, was successful at the box office.
